Poorer countries have taken the brunt of the hit, one being Bangladesh, who’s first COVID case was confirmed in January of 2020. Since then, there have been over 2,037,947 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 29,445 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).1
COVID-19 has had significant challenges on the health of those situated in Bangladesh, as there has been a shortage of medical supplies, protective equipment(PPE), ventilators, and oxygen, which has been a major challenge for healthcare workers. Specifically, Sylhet Bangladesh, a major city in the northeastern region with a population of over 950,000 people, is one of the regions that has had a massive impact with the shortage of medical supplies. Healthcare facilities and hospitals have been overwhelmed by patients, and there are reports on the shortage of medical supplies such as ICU beds.2
What has caused this shortage? According to the National Library of Medicine, 95% of pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) come from other countries.3 During COVID-19, many government systems limited exports, which disrupted the distribution of medicine and supplies, and because of Bangladesh's dependency on these other countries, they in turn had a shortage in those supplies.
ALHERA COVID-19 Relief Taskforce (ACR Taskforce) began a relief project to provide food assistance to the economic victims of Coronavirus in Bangladesh for distributing food packages to affected families. With your help, ALHERA successfully distributed aid packages to several towns in Sylhet which included Shadipur, Osmaninagar, Bagorkolla, and Shipgonj. Families received rice, lentils, salt, garlic, onions, oil, hand sanitizer, and masks to help them get through several months of hardship.
